Parkallen and the Papaschase

One of the most important topics of Parkallen’s history is the story of the Papaschase First Nation, who lived in the area before it was known as Parkallen.

In the future when my grandchildren inquire about the reserve you may turn it over to them. That is how I want to leave it for them.
— Chief Papaschase, 1877

History of the
Papaschase First Nation

John Quinn-Gladieu, Chief Papaschase (translated as “pileated woodpecker”) was born in the 1830’s in the region of Lesser Slave Lake. He lived there with his Cree band until the early 1850’s when famine and disease forced them to redefine their way of life. They came to Edmonton with the aim of being closer to the fur trade and calling this new region their home.
